Century League Finals Green Sheet
Javin De La Torre in his last high school race ever runs a 4 second PR for the 800, 2:09. Way to end the season.
Blake Harris quadruples at league finals, finishing 5th place in the 2 mile, 4th place in the 1600 in a personal best 4:36, 2nd place in the 800, almost breaking 2:05, and he runs a super leg on the 4x4 team splitting 56.6. Such a good league finals. Blake ends his sophomore year, establishing himself as the #10 F/S athlete in Esperanza school history in both the 1600 and 3200. All things considered, who would have expected this 5:14 freshman to turn into a 4:36 sophomore? "Yeah Srs"
Brandon Powell continued to impress, running a personal best 9:49 two mile. He can run 14:45 pace for 2 miles right now. What can he do in the Fall after a great summer of training? Awesome job, and great season!

Century League Prelims
Green Sheet
6/13 milers Pr'd, and some ran HUGE Personal Records.
Freshmen Noah Freeman and Jesse Wilch dropped major personal bests when it counts. Freeman 5:01 to 4:52, and J Wilch 5:04 to 4:56. Way to go. Great season for you both.
Parker Shapen shaved off two seconds in his 800 time. He can now run 5:06 pace for a half mile. With a great summer, I'm betting Shapen could see the 17:50-18:15 range during xc season.
Andrew Chapin took off an entire second to run 5:15 in the mile. Remember, Blake Harris went from 5:14 to 4:38 in one year. I know Andrew is carefully planning his summer to so he can be apart of this varsity team next year. Great season!
Anthony Robert ran the 400 m for the first time all season and ran a personal best 1:26. This equates to a 5:44 mile pace. With Anthony's dedication to the sport and to the team, I know I can count on Anthony to keep on improving. Anthony broke 7 minutes in the mile this year 3 times, running a PB 6:52. I think Anthony might be able to break 6 minutes next year.
Hunter Talbott ran a personal best of 2:26 for the 800 m race. He's capable of much, much more. Talbott ran 5:16 in the mile as well this year, and these are good times for a freshman. I'm not satisfied. I hope Talbott isn't satisfied either. I've seen glimpses of a beast within, and as soon as this kid realizes how great he can be, there is no stopping the Talbott Machine. I see Top 7 material in this kid. If he can get his dedication level up to 100% this summer, I guarantee Talbott will be well under 17 minutes.
Elijah Nepsa just as bad luck sometimes. He got sick for a while, hand some ankle issues, his training was up and down all season. I see a lot of potential in Nepsa, and as of right now, he has never had a full summer to train. Nepsa is a dark horse for me still. How fast can I really get him running next year. What are his goals? 67 seconds for a 400 m is 4:28 pace. Nepsa showed endurance as well this year in breaking 2:30 for the 800 as well. I see a 2 mile specialist in the future, maybe? Junior and senior year in track for this kid, he very well might score some points on the varsity level. Great work Nepsa.
Can anyone say, Max Ellington? This kid is on fire. He's one and done as well. This is why I saved him and had him run fresh at the Elmo/Foothill/EHS tri meet. I saw glimpses of greatness within Maximus. Which is why I decided to give him a shot at the last tri-meet. Not only did he rise to the occasion, but he ran under 11 minutes in the 2 mile, and scored 6 points at the varsity level. His tactics worked for the meet. I am truly surprised that Ellington's tactics worked at league prelims. He started off in last, moved up in huge surges around packs of runners, and by 500 m to go, he finally clawed his way up to the front pack. They then picked it up, and kicked it in, and Ellington was dropped. Then out of nowhere, he had another burst of energy and willed himself to pick the pace up. He bounced back and forth between competitors on the last lap, and crossed the finish line in 4:48. I was shocked. From 4:59 to 4:48. I think Ellington needs to work on his focus during the race. Respond to the others, don't let them run away from you. Get out hard. Settle in, and put yourself in the mix from the very beginning. It's A LOT easier to hang on to a pack than it is to claw your way back up through packs of runners, surging and wasting energy. I think Ellington could run 4:43-4:47 on Friday. Just hang on to the pack from the beginning and don't let them go. This is the race strategy. I'm excited, as Ellington is the only JV qualifier other than Josh Park, who qualified in the 800m. It's been a great season, but do you have one more race in you?
Brandon Powell dropped a sick PR. He broke the 4:40 barrier three times this season, running 4:39 each time. He ran a great race and hung in there with some of the nation's best and ran a personal best of 4:31 in the 1600 m. Powell is in line to have a great summer. If Powell has a great summer, records will fall. Powell in his second year of running ran a 4:31. He will have the 7th fastest mile time in the fastest league in the nation next year. He's currently in the top 10 for returners to next year's cross country season. I think he and Blake could finish in the top 10 next year in league. That's an awesome 1-2 punch. We just need a healthy 3-4-5 and we can be a CIF Finalist team. Powell has one more race. I'm waiting for this. Under the lights, in the cool evening, magic can happen. The last time Powell ran in the evening, he broke 16 minutes.
OCC Athlete of the Meet-
Blake Harris latched onto the pack, running with some of the best freshmen and sophomores in Orange County to run a 14 second personal best in the 3200m race. His time, 10:02.65, knocks Thomas French off the All-Time list. As it stands, Blake is currently the #10 All-Time F/S athlete in the 1600 and 3200m races. (4:38 & 10:02) His splits were 2:23, 4:56, and 7:31). His 71-second last lap proved he has a baby kick as he moved up from 11th to 9th. He was one place away from scoring, as 8th place is awarded 1 point. Way to go! That kick will be there next week at league finals, I guarantee it.

Athlete of the Meet for Foothill/El Modena/Esperanza Tri-meet: Max Ellington.
In his first varsity race ever, Max hung onto some of the best runners in county and the state. He hung on through four laps before falling off into no-man's land. He held on because of the big gap he opened up on the rest of the field the first mile, and hung on for 3rd place. Max scored one point against El Modena and five points against Foothill. He also PR'd, running 10:52 for two miles. Awesome job.

Ocean View Invitational
There were a lot of positive things that happened at OVHS on Saturday.
Andrew Chapin had a great 800 m race and looks to be shaping up quite nice. He lowered his 800m best from 2:29 to 2:22. Andrew just might be able to get close to that 5 minute barrier by season's end. 2:30 pace buddy.
Javin De La Torre, all the hard work is finally starting to show itself. Javin began the day by winning his heat in the 1600m and he looked strong doing it. He then came back to take charge of his heat in the 800m, passing Grossman and Harris early in the race, showing that he meant business. Javin had a 3-4 second PR in running 2:13. Way to go Javin.
Blake Harris-
Can you say athlete of the meet? Blake before his 1600m went off, stated that he was going to make the top 10 list in the 1600m. I shrugged it off and sort of said to myself, "I'll believe it when I see it". He was more than 4 seconds off, and I honestly did not think he would break 4:40 on this day. I knew he had a chance, and I figured it would come at League Finals, but Blake ran a very tactical race and got out hard, 65, 2:15. Blake kind of tied up that last lap, and he needs to work on that kick of his, but 4:38.39 is a SOLID performance. With this performance, Blake now currently sits at #10 All-Time F/S 1600m, bumping Ralph Pettus, 4:38.54 off of the list. And he's faster than coach as a sophomore. That's what I'm talkin about!

Irvine Distance Carnival
To start the Saturday morning off, we had 4 freshmen run in the 3200m event. Now, the 3200m, which might as well be called the 2mile, might be seen as an obscure, long, boring event. You can't look at this event in that way.
The 2 mile is my favorite event. It's not like the mile, which is over in a blur, and which can be described as a a beautiful, 4 act play. It's not like the 800m, which is a brutal, gut wrenching long sprint. It's not like the 400 m dash, which for us distance runners is an exciting race, but to the sprinters, is a long and painful 1 lap.
The two mile, must be looked at through a different set of lenses. I like to think of it as 8 laps of fun. The first four laps must be run with patience and practical thinking. You go out too hard, and the last mile just plain sucks. You go out too easy, and then others you were capable of running with open up a gap that becomes impossible to close. The two mile is the closest thing there is to the cross country 3 mile courses. In the Season PR sheet, try not to look so much at the 2 mile time, but rather the pace at which you are completing the two mile in.
Hayden Ritchie, Noah Freeman, Devin Gibbons and Parker Shapen all ran great races.
To start it off, Shapen ran the event for the first time in his life, and almost broke 13 minutes. His pace was 6:30 a mile. Well, if you flashback to cross country, Shapen's 3 mile PR was 22 minutes and change. 6:30 pace = 19:30 for three miles. That's nearly 3 minutes faster than his cross country PR.
Ritchie, Freeman and Gibbons all ran in the same race. The amount of improvement from these three freshmen has been superb. Ritchie and Freeman ran personal bests, of 18 seconds and 10 seconds, and Gibbons ran the 2 mile for the first time in his life.
Flashback to cross country, Ritchie was my 4th fastest freshman, Freeman was 5th, and Gibbons was 3rd, all running personal bests at league finals of 18:13 (Gibbons), 18:46 (Ritchie), and 18:54 (freeman). Want to know what their two mile pace was on Saturday?
Ritchie's 2 mile pace = 16:12 pace.
Freeman's 2 mile pace = 16:45 pace
Gibbons' 2 mile pace = 17:14 pace.
Needless to say, we could be very good, and very young next year. Gibbons has seen up and down training as he's been sick a handful of times in the past few months. Getting healthy and staying healthy is the key. This freshman class, has the potential to do some crazy stuff next year, as there's no telling how fast we could be after a long and hard summer of training. Just think of how good we could be once we plug in healthy Wilch twins and David Tecker rejoins us after volleyball.
Powell continues to impress, running 4:39.1, his second time under 4:40 in two days! Consistency is starting to pay off! Leg splits: (68.4) (72.0) (72.6) (66.1). We gotta work on the two middle laps, but Brandon very well could see himself chip another 5-10 seconds off this mark by the end of the season.
Javin and Kevin Grossman both ran personal bests, both running 4:54.4 and 4:54.5 for the 1600m. Kevin puts another tally mark on the list of sub 5 guys on the team. Who else will join the list?
Athlete of the meet, hands down has to be Blake Harris for his 10:17 2 mile performance. Blake tucked in to the pack and hung with them until the very last few laps. His half mile splits were (2:30.2) (2:34.5) (2:35.6) (2:36.8). Gotta work on that kick buddy!
Great work Aztecs!

Esperanza v. Villa Park v. El Dorado
A lot of good things happened out there at our only home meet. For starters, our varsity team beat El Dorado, the first dual meet win of the season.
Brandon Powell scored 8 points, plus 1.25 for his leg on the 4x4 squad. 9.25 points
Blake Harris scored 1 point, plus 1.25 for his leg on the 4x4 squad. 2.25 points
Dakota Rodriguez scored 3 points for his 2nd place finish to El Dorado in the 3200m. 3 points
Javin De La Torre scored 1 point for his 3rd place finish to El Dorado in the 3200m. 1 point
Kevin Grossman scored 1.25 points for his leg on the 4x4 squad. 1.25 points
(Relays are scored 5-0, so 5 points divided by 4 legs = 1.25 points)
To top it off, Powell broke 4:40 for the first time, Blake Harris ran a 4-second PR of 4:42 in the 1600.
Kevin Grossman is finally starting to come into his own again, splitting the fastest leg on the 4x4 squad.
On the JV Side, Josh Park did a great pacing job, running a 4:57 mile and leading a whole slew of runners to personal/season bests, but much of the crew was just a bit off from breaking the 5 minute barrier. Greenberg, C. Harris, Worden and Welty all PR'd or set season bests. It's only a matter of time before we have 10-15 guys sub 5 in the mile.
On the FS side, Noah Freeman with a 68 second lap held on for a PR in the mile, 5:01.2.
Elijah Nepsa, Fernando Perez and Parker Shapen all have huge PR's as they run 5:48, 5:46, and 5:43 respectively.
Athletes of the Meet:
Brandon Powell for his 9.25 points on the varsity side.
Parker Shapen for a 13 second PR in the mile, 5:56 to 5:43. Excellent work!

Javin De La Torre runs personal bests of 2:16 and 4:54.
Jose Quezada runs 2:23 and 5:14 personal bests.
Andrew Chapin runs a Personal best 5:16.
Anthony Robert breaks the 7 minute barrier, 6:55!
Austin Loza runs a personal best of 5:33 as well.
Jesse Wilch continues to impress, lowering his 1600m time by 8 seconds! 5:14 to 5:06!! Nice work kid. Athlete of the Meet.

Elite 8 Meet at Saddleback College
There were a lot of PR's out there on the Men's side. Brandon Powell and Blake Harris set meet records in three different events, with Harris lowering his personal best to 2:08 in the 800m. Powell continues to impress as he executed a race plan perfectly and learned a lot about himself. 10:16 for the two mile, that's 15:24 pace for 3 miles.
Anthony Robert is on the cusp of breaking the 7 minute barrier, as is Fernando Perez, having run 6 flat two times in a row now. Soon.
Jesse Wilch, Hayden Ritchie and Devin Gibbons all experienced Personal bests, and Hunter Talbott is creeping back into the competitive scene on this freshmen team.
Currently the top 6 freshmen and their mile times:
1. Noah Freeman 5:02
2. Hayden Ritchie 5:08
3. Nathan Wilch 5:13
4. Jesse Wilch 5:14
5. Hunter Talbott 5:16
6. Devin Gibbons 5:16
How many of you will break the elusive 5 minute barrier? All of you have a shot. Work together!
Dakota Rodriguez ran a good race and broke the other runners at the right time. I wish the race was a little more competitive so that Rodriguez could have hung on and been dragged to a faster time. Great race nonetheless.
Thomas Castro and Matt Worden are on pace to break the barrier as well. Who will break it first? The freshmen or the seniors?
Max Ellington is the newest member to the Sub-5 club, running a personal best of 4:59. Great work Max. Athlete of the Meet.

Irvine Invitational
So many good things happened at this meet. There were tons of Personal bests recorded. Noah Freeman started the day off by ALMOST breaking 5 minutes. He needs to work on keeping his head still especially when he's kicking it in. Noah shaved off about 13 seconds, or 4 seconds a lap from his previous time. 5:02 is a FANTASTIC time for a freshman, and it's only his second meet of the year. Good stuff.
Brandon Powell was sick all week, ran only four miles on Friday and came out to record a personal best of 4:44 in the 1600m. Consistency is key, and the more consistent Brandon is able to train, the more head he will turn as other coaches and athletes say "who is that guy, and where did he come from".
In the 800m race, Blake Harris jumped at the bit to show off his leg speed when another athlete pulled out due to sore heel. Blake proceeded to win his heat, and almost broke the 2:10 barrier. Jesse Wilch was also in the heat and shaved off almost 20 seconds in his 800 to record a personal best of 2:20. This kid has some wheels, race by race, he will discover his true potential.
Blake Harris came back to run the 3200m, and he might have taken off a little too early, opting to lead the race for the better part of 4 laps before being passed with 400m to go. Hayden Ritchie proceeded to run 11:06, or back to back 5:33 miles. That's an excellent first two mile.
Athlete of the meet? Has to be Blake Harris for his 2:10/10:38 double. This kid is for real folks.

Stars of the Brea/Canyon/Esperanza meet:
-Javin De La Torre hanging on the speed demons for two laps in the mile. He'll find the 4:45-4:49 range soon enough. He's ready.
-Blake Harris 7 second PR in the 1600 (4:46), and a 1 second PR in the 800 (2:09).
-Brandon Powell, for scoring two points against arguably the two strongest teams in Orange County. Some could even argue the nation. Brea Olinda was ranked 9th in the nation at one point in cross country. and Canyon was ranked in the 40's range nation wide. Canyon is also one of the only teams to beat Arcadia High School last fall as well. To score 2 points in a Tri-meet against those two teams is quite impressive. Good things to come.
-Dakota Rodriguez- Showing a little something in the two mile. Still too early in the season to tell how good of shape he is in. Like Javin, he's ready to bust.
Anthony Robert, for a ridiculous 45 second PR in the 1600, 7:15. Athlete of the Meet
